Diplomatic relations between Kuwait and Austria date back to the year 1965. The Austrian Embassy, which in the beginning was headed on the level of a chargé d’affaires, was officially inaugurated in the year 1979. The first Austrian Ambassador took office in 1983. In the year 1984 Kuwait opened its Embassy in the Austrian capital Vienna. The increasing importance of Kuwait as market for goods, a country of transit and a financial market (Kuwait co-sponsored the Austria Center in Vienna) let to an intensification of the bilateral relations. The visit of Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky in the year 1981 stood at the beginning of this development.

Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs Erwin Lanc visited Kuwait in 1984 and in 1986 the Kuwaiti Minister for Foreign Affairs and current Emir, Scheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah came to Vienna. Another highlight in the bilateral relations was the visit of the Austrian Federal President Kurt Waldheim and Vice Chancellor Alois Mock in Kuwait in 1988. In the year 1996 Austrian State Secretary Benita Ferrero-Waldner visited Kuwait, which was followed by another visit in May 2003.

In November 2004 the Speaker of the Austrian National Assembly, Andreas Khol met with members of the state leadership in Kuwait. In May 2007 the Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ursula Plassnik also met with leading Kuwaiti state representatives, such as the Emir, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Assembly.

Latest highlight in the bilateral relations was the official visit of Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer from February 22nd and February 23rd, 2009, who was accompanied by the Austrian Federal Minister of Economy, Family and Youth, Rinhold Mitterlehner and the Austrian Federal Minister of Health, Alois Stöger. Talks were held with the Emir, the Crown Prince, the Deputy Prime Minister as well as the Speaker of the Assembly. The Federal President also inaugurated the Austrian- Kuwaiti Economic Forum.
